You can hire tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, camping lanterns, camp furniture, coolers and other camp kitchen gear - anything you need for a wonderful outdoor experience at Yosemite National Park.

Specifically for Yosemite National Park, we recommend getting a 3-season sleeping bag for the greater part of the year. Even in summer, though the sun may blaze down on you during the day, nights will get deceivingly cold. Check the weather forecast prior to heading out. If temperatures fall to below 50°F, opt for a warmer sleeping bag or consider investing in a sleeping bag liner. In winter and the shoulder seasons, if temperatures fall below 30°F, rent a winter sleeping bag. All of our rental sleeping pads are insulated for all season use.

Practical information for camping at Yosemite National Park

First and foremost, check out this page (coming up) about things to do and places to stay at Yosemite National Park. Aside from that, here are a few more important things to know when staying overnight at Yosemite:

  • Yosemite is a very popular national park! Reserve your campsite and anything else that requires pre-booking as soon as you know your travel dates. Note that driving in the park may take longer than you anticipate due to traffic jams.

  • Black bears are active in summer in Yosemite National Park. Carry bear spray and make noise when hiking in the wilderness. Use the park-provided bear boxes to store all of your food and belongings, including your toiletries. Here's a great resource about what to do if you see a bear.

  • All campgrounds, even in the backcountry, have bear boxes, so you don't need to bring your own bear-safe container.

  • Winter is a magical time to visit Yosemite National Park, but your choice of hiking trails and campgrounds is limited to Yosemite Valley, and you can only access the park from the south and west. Most other Yosemite National Park roads, hiking trails, and campgrounds close in winter due to snow.

  • Summer (June, July, and August) is the best time to visit Yosemite National Park because everything is open - unless there's a wildfire.

  • The weather always surprises. During most of the year, even in summer, prepare for a much colder night than you think. Day and nighttime temperatures vary dramatically.

  • In winter, fly into San Francisco and combine your city trip with a short detour to Yosemite National Park. It's only 4 hours away. In summer, we recommend making a multi-day one-way road trip out of it with a starting point in Las Vegas.
